Class Descriptions (for newer or different types of classes)

Modern Dance

Born in the early 20th century, modern dance is a dance style that centers on a dancer's own interpretations instead of structured steps, as in traditional ballet dancing. Dancers are more relaxed with a free style of dancing. Modern is danced in bare feet. This style encourages dancers to use their emotions and moods to design their own steps and routines.

Lyrical Dance

A dance style that blends ballet and jazz dance. Lyrical is generally smoother and a bit faster that ballet, but mot quite as fast as jazz. A lyrical dancer uses movement to express strong emotions such as love, joy and anger. Powerful, expressive songs are often used in lyrical dance to give dancers a chance to express strong emotions through their dancing. Movements are much more fluid and graceful.

Street Jazz

For those students who love both forms of dance, but don’t have time for multiple classes, this class is for you. Learn all of the updated moves as seen on music videos. Plus, learn all the fun of jazz with leaps, turns and floor work, increasing flexibility, coordination, timing, musical awareness, and strength.

Hip Hop

Hip-hop dance is a unique and exciting style of street dance that is most commonly performed to hip-hop music. Hip-hop dance is a vibrant form of dance that combines a variety of freestyle movements to create a cultural piece of art.

Pointe

Pointe class is the part of classical ballet technique that concerns pointe work, in which a ballet dancer supports all body weight on the tips of fully extended feet. Pointe work is performed while wearing pointe shoes.

Contemporary Dance

A style of expressive dance that combines elements of several dance genres including modern, jazz, lyrical and classical ballet. Contemporary dancers strive to connect the mind and the body through fluid dance movements. Unlike the strict, structured nature of ballet, contemporary is much more fluid and open to interpretation. This style focuses on the floorwork, using gravity to pull them down to the floor. This dance is mostly done in bare feet.
